Have You Tried Fashion Jewelry? You Should! (Viewed: 195)
Posted by Danielle Burrow on April 25, 2011 @ 4:26 pm

Fashion jewelry is a great opportunity to diversify your product base.  Fashion jewelry provides a way to be involved in a market segment that is continuing to grow despite the recession.

That is right!  Fashion jewelry, especially jewelry like our jewelry line Fancy Pants offers with lower price points, has continued to see solid sales from 2008, 2009, and to date!  The U.S. on average imported 12% more fashion jewelry in 2009 than in 2008 from our primary country of imports, and that was right in the thick of the recession!

Why has fashion jewelry been able to hold it’s own during a time when so many other industries have struggled?  There are three primary reasons:

  1. Profit margin.  The range of mark up for fashion jewelry ranges for 300% - 1,000%!  That is a mark up you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else!
  2. Impulse purchase dollar limit is higher.  In many markets, the top limit someone will spend on impulse (buying without thinking about it or consulting their spouse) is around $20.  For fashion jewelry, this increases to around $50, especially for sets.  This means your customers are willing to spend more on impulse than what they normally would spend on other items.
  3. I still want a new, trendy look.  Due to tighter budgets, consumers have often been forced to wear last season’s clothes, but they want to make last season’s outfit look up to date.  Fashion jewelry is an inexpensive and easy way to accomplish this!  Customers can add a great piece of statement jewelry to bring out their own uniqueness and completely update any outfit.

Try out the latest trends from Fancy Pants.  What’s HOT right now in the fashion jewelry market is:

  • BIG & BOLD!  This is called “Statement Jewelry” and its purpose is just that – to make a statement!  Necklaces that are really hot right now in this area are bib and waterfall necklaces which Fancy Pants carries a wide selection.

  • One size fits all Stretchy Rings and Bracelets that are BIG on style!  Fancy Pants also carries some of the hottest styles of this up and coming segment of Fashion Jewelry.

  • Whisper (Floating) Bracelets have been extremely strong sellers throughout the Winter and into the Spring.  We can hardly keep these one the shelves and you'll find the same in your store!

Try some Fancy Pants jewelry in your store today!

Experiential Marketing (Viewed: 206)
Posted by Danielle Burrow on February 24, 2011 @ 2:12 pm

Sell an Experience - Not a Product

Experiential Marketing is a fairly new term that has come about from the book Experience Economy by B. Joseph Pine and James H. Gilmore.  The term refers to marketing a whole experience, not just a good or service.

With this form of marketing, the customer is the product.  This may sound odd, but the goal is to offer a life transforming experience so that the customer is your greatest testimonial - better than your product could ever speak.

A great testimonial of this type of marketing is Starbucks.  They have taken one of the world's most common commodities and built a rock solid brand on a relatively small marketing budget (around $1million annually).

How did they achieve their success?  They worked on building relationships with their customers and recognize the value of customer satisfaction, ambiance of the facility, and perception of the brand.

The value of this can clearly be exhibited in the cost of their product.  The cost of coffee beans when harvested is approximately $.50 per pound.  The value realized per cup of Starbucks coffee is approximately $230 per pound.  That is an increase of 46,000%!

Even the smallest of businesses can capitalize on Experiential Marketing.  Just follow some of the suggestions below:
  1. Connect with your customers!  Talk with them, ask them for suggestions, treat them like your friend.  After all, they are your most important marketing tool.
  2. Study your customers.  What fragrances do they enjoy?  What music do they find soothing to make them want to stay and purchase?  Then apply what you find out.  Burn candles or tart warmers with those fragrances.  Play the music they like.  Offer a free cup of coffee.
  3. Are there workshops or other memorable events that you could hold where you could charge admission?  People are into the overall experience, not just what product you have.
Keep these thoughts in mind as you continue to evolve your marketing plan to maximize the success of your store.

So You Want to Make Money? (Viewed: 302)
Posted by Danielle Burrow on February 10, 2011 @ 1:44 pm

After working at Harvest Scents & Traders for more than eight years now, I can definitely see a commonality between the stores that are successful and the ones that fail after just a short period of time.  It is such a strong commonality that often, it can be foretold the very first time the customer visits our showroom or phones in an order.

The bottom line difference between success and failure of any business is sufficient capital.  Any business owner MUST research and be prepared to contribute sufficient capital into their venture for it to even have a fighting chance of being successful.  This fact is truly Business 101, but many people overlook this when starting a business.

One may even ask, "What is capital?".  According to www.dictionary.com, it is "material wealth used or available for use in the production of more wealth".  In the case of starting a home decor store, it is cash for use in purchasing inventory along with being able to pay expenses while your business is growing.

There are three main areas that you will want to make sure your capital can cover:

  1. Inventory - Every store needs sufficient inventory to make their store look full and appealing to their customers.  How can your store look fresh and appealing if with regards to inventory it looks like you are going out of business?
  2. Expenses during slow times - Statistically, January through March has much lower sales than the remainder of the year.  If you spend all of your profit from your Christmas sales, how are you going to cover your expenses during the slow times?  What are you going to use to purchase fill in inventory or special orders for your loyal customers?  You can't if you all your extra capital is spent.  You have to be able to save for a rainy day and even many rainy days.
  3. Your personal expenses for up to three years if you are planning on quitting your primary source of income - Ouch!  This one always hurts.  Experts say you need to keep all of your profit invested into your business for a minimum of three years in order to establish sufficient capital to grow your business and cover during slow times or even short term dips in the economy.  If you have quit your "day job" to pursue your dream of being a shop owner, what is going to pay your bills while you are growing and establishing your business?
Feeling a little despondent since you just started a business on a shoestring budget?  There is still hope for you!!!

  1. Business Loans - If you are low on personal debt, you can take out a line of credit or a business loan to get your business up and running.  These loans often have much lower rates than credit cards.  It would not be a good idea to quit your primary source of income if you utilize this option.
  2. Federal and state assistance - There are several associations that ofter free advise and even offer assistance and special loan programs for the small business owner.  Particularly check out this avenue if you are a woman small business owner.  Two sites to definitely check out are http://www.sba.gov/ and http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/blstategrants.htm.
In summary, to insure success of your bottom line, the bottom line is that you have to spend money to make money.  All aspects of starting a business takes money (capital) from inventory to marketing to your overhead.  The most successful businesses, though, research how much will need to be spent prior to jumping in to the venture head first.  You would make sure your pool is full of water before you jump off the high dive.  Please do the same before starting a business.
